Seven Update

An open-source update platform for Windows — automatic update notification and installation for any app, with an SDK for publishers.

  • C#
  • .NET
  • WPF
  • Windows
  • Open Source

Seven Update brought a Windows Update–style experience to third-party software. Think of it as a package manager for app updates: it checks for, notifies about, and installs updates for any application that publishes a Seven Update feed.

How it worked

  • SUI (Seven Update Information) files list an app’s updates and their payloads.
  • SUA (Seven Update Application) files describe an app — name, install location, publisher, and where its SUI lives.
  • SUL (Seven Update List) files act as repositories: arrays of SUA entries.

The SDK

The SDK let developers create and publish updates without writing any code: create a project, describe the app, choose where to host the files, and Seven Update clients pick up new releases automatically.

Seven Update was licensed under the GNU GPL v3.0 and is no longer under active development.
